Welcome to all parents

This session is only for parents of newcomer first-year students. You are also welcome to join us online via MS TEAMS, if you are unable to be on campus in person. The Dean, Vice-dean (Teaching and Learning) as well as the faculty director will share some general information about the faculty and our approach to undergraduate teaching and learning. We will also answer any questions you might have.

Welcome by the Dean of Science

This is your opportunity to meet the Dean of the Faculty of Science and ask some general questions about the faculty and our programmes. You will also meet the Student and Academic Affairs Officer, who will be your main contact person during this time

Welcome to BSc... and What's it like: Current students' perspectives

During this session the programme leader of your specific programme, or focal area will speak to you about what this programme has to offer and where it might take you in future. You will get more details about the study fields, research and possible careers. This is an ideal time to discuss your future with the degree and find out whether this is the correct programme to achieve your goals. You will also have the opportunity to hear directly from current students what their experiences are and get some tips about finding your feet in this new phase of your life. As always you will have the opportunity to ask some questions.

Unbox your Degree

During this session you will make a physical map of your specific academic path for the next 3 or 4 years. You will look at the core modules, elective modules, study hours, prerequisites, majors etc. You will clearly see what the critical modules are that might block you to continue, should you not be successful. You will also identify modules where you might require additional support. Please save this map in a safe space or stick it to a cupboard in your room, as it will be valuable for referring to when planning your timetable, when participating in academic advising opportunities, or when you just need a little reminder of where you're heading.

Be ready for Monday class

This session is crucial for all newcomer first-year students. This includes all ECP students. During this session we will share some important information to ensure that you are ready to start the academic year and show you were to access the information. We will also share some information about the activities of rest of the week and semester.

Meet the NSC (Natural Science student Committee)

In this session you will be introduced to the NSC members and they will share with you some important information on the role they play in the Faculty.

Quantum Quest

This race across campus is facilitated by the Natural Science Student Committee and aimed at getting to know the campus and especially those buildings and places most relevant to BSc-students.

Student Wellness

Student wellness refers to the overall health and well-being of university students. It encompasses multiple dimensions, such as physical, emotional, social, intellectual, occupational and spiritual aspects. In this session students will be introduced to the resources provided by the Centre for Student Counselling and Development (CSCD) and other support services available on campus that they can access to support their overall well-being.

Get your tech ready

In this session we will help sort out your password, Wi-Fi and all other technology-related issues and give you a short tour of the online learning system which is used for teaching and learning purposes, by all the modules offered in the Faculty of Science.

Ubuntu @ Science

A brief overview of the Equality unit and its services. Details of informed consent, and Gender Based Violence will be covered with particular detail of what to do and how to go about when you are affected by any of these. There will also be a discussion on your duty to report sexual assault and an open conversation on matters related to the services offered by this unit.

Tour of the SU Library and Information Services

Take a short tour of the main campus library and see all the services like the Maker space, study areas and faculty specific academic support which they provide on top of the traditional library experience.

Extended Curriculum Programme (ECP) Information

During this session the ECP student meet their lecturers, are assigned to mentors, get their timetable as well as other crucial information to make sure there are no surprises on day one.

Benchmark test

This quiz is meant as a self-diagnostic tool for you to see what fundamental skills and concepts you need to freshen up on, and where you would like to make use of the academic support material designed by lecturers, specifically to support student success in introductory first-year modules. No preparation is required. Please bring your calculator and stationery with you.
